Road trip – 0-236 km – Burra

We got up around 07:00 and prepared the last stuff, had a shower, and breakfast. We closed the house, and our road trip started.

Fully packed

The first stop we had was in a town called Hahndorf. It is the first German settlement in Australia. Here are many German shops and pubs here; anyway, pretty touristy here. We had a coffee in the German Inn, an old Cafe with music of the Middle Ages.

We went into a shop where they were selling all kinds of traditional Australian stuff, hats and belts … I found a pretty good pocket knife. I left my last one in Goa at the airport, again in my hand luggage.

Excalibur 😆

The petrol in Australia is much cheaper than in Europe. The price for 1 liter is around AUD 1.80 (€1). I make all payments with my Wise account here; they charge only 0.44% instead of my ING Bank, which charges 2.2% for international transactions or ATM. I just got some Aussie Dollars for emergencies or for the outback, where I can’t pay with digital. What strikes me here is the background music in the shops; it’s so much better than in Germany or Portugal.

We stopped in Williamstown and got some overpriced sandwiches. Anyway, we will be better prepared tomorrow, making some sandwiches the day before or in the morning. We have a fridge and lots of food with us. Around 15:00, we reached Burra. Here is a Camper & Caravan place, so we could set up the tent here. It was easier than I thought. Andrew is just a very practical person.

After the tent was set up and the deckchairs placed inside, we walked into town. Bought some bread and veggies for dinner, and some washing tabs which we forgot to bring. It’s just 14 degrees here in the evening, will be colder in the desert. But we are not there yet.
