Road trip – 189 km – Philip Island

After being for three nights in Geelong we would be back on the road. 30 km from Geelong would be Queenscliff. There is a ferry to Sorrento. I got the ticket online already yesterday. The ferry would need 45 minutes to reach Sorrento. When we arrived in Queenscliff, we didn’t know when the next would depart. Andrew saw the ferry already being pretty busy. Driving to the counter, the QR code would be scanned. The lady said the ferry would leave in 5 minutes. We boarded the ferry and would be the last car arriving. Perfect timing!

On board

It was windy, but the crossing was quite smooth.

Reaching Sorrento, we left the ferry and thought it would be a good idea to ask first in the information center what would be nice to visit around the area. We got a lot of information and maps there. Next, we needed to do some shopping for food. But it started raining, heavy rain. Then it hailed.

Hail in Sorrento

When there was less rain, we walked towards an IGA market. Stocked up on some food for the next days and something for lunch today. We sat in the car and had lasagne. It was still too rainy to think about camping. I booked another room, I thought it would be in Shoreham, around 30 km from here.

At first, we would drive in the opposite direction to the Point Nepean National Park. There was an old Fort to visit, a relic from World War I.

There was also a Quarantine Station. The Point Nepean Quarantine Station is a former quarantine and military training facility in Portsea, Victoria, Australia, on the Mornington Peninsula. It was established as a quarantine in 1852 following the Ticonderoga’s arrival at the heads of Port Philip with a significant number of passengers with scarlet fever. It ceased operation as a quarantine in 1980, but was used by the military for training purposes since the 1950s (see Officer Cadet School). Currently, it hosts markets and similar events in the flat area and is part of the Point Nepean National Park.

When coming back to the car, I checked the accommodation on booking.com. I didn’t book a room in Shoreham but in Philip Island. It would be a 2-hour drive, unexpected. We reached the Island. There is a bridge to the island.
