Road trip – 178 km – Threadbo

It was pretty comfortable having a spacious apartment in Cooma. After a good sleep, shower and breakfast, we started driving to the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre. The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma is a public facility that teaches about the history, engineering, and future of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. It features an immersive theatre, interactive displays about renewable energy, live screens showing the national energy grid, and information on the Snowy 2.0 expansion project. Visitors can learn about the Scheme’s past, understand how Snowy Hydro operates today, and see how it is underpinning Australia’s renewable energy future.

Our next destination would be Charlotte Pass. The highest area in Australia. We passed the state border to New South Wales today. At 1835 meters altitude we reached the spot. Here we are right in the snowy mountains. There was still a bit of snow on top of the hills. The highest mountain in mainland Australia is Mount Kosciuszko, with an elevation of 2,228 metres (7,310 ft).

Unfortunately, it was raining, and we were not prepared for a hike around here. Anyway, it was beautiful to see. So we continued driving towards Threadbo, where we booked a hotel room last night. Threadbo is a Ski Resort with lifts. As there is no snow these spring days, there is a mountain bike park. Bicycles are everywhere.

Threadbo has only 400 inhabitants but 4000 beds. It must be quite busy here in the winter season. We strolled through the town for a while, watched the bike activities, then went into a bar, having some food and drinks.

The hotel and its rooms are very comfortable here. Andrew was asking if we could have a room with a mountain view. And we got one another free upgrade today. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
