Road trip – 0 km – Port MacDonnell

It is convenient to be in a beautiful house when it is rainy and stormy. Andrew and I have our own rooms with big beds here. It was a relaxed day, working on my laptop and sitting in a cozy room with an open fire. At lunchtime, I left with Andrew to have some Fish & Chips. There were two Restaurants for Fish & Chips in town, but both were closed. We found another Restaurant and had some delicious Sweet Potato Chips with Fishballs.

Today would be the Melbourne Cup, the famous Horse Race in Australia. Andrew had a bet on a horse.

There were many people in the pub, watching all these races and placing their bets. We would see the main race in Michelle’s house later.

A rainy, windy day

The day was passing by, the dogs tried to play with us, they can keep you quite busy. Michelle has two Border Collies.

We were planning our further trip along the Great Ocean Road for the next days until Melbourne. There is an option to visit Tasmania, as we have enough time.

Tasmania is a fascinating island state of Australia, located off the country’s southeastern coast.

  • Location: It is separated from the Australian mainland (specifically the state of Victoria) by the Bass Strait, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) to the south.
  • Capital: Hobart (the second-oldest capital city in Australia).
  • Nature and Wilderness: It is world-renowned for its pristine wilderness, dramatic coastlines, and unique wildlife. Over 40% of its land is protected, including the vast Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
  • Wildlife: It is the only place in the world where the Tasmanian Devil is found in the wild.
  • History: It has a significant convict history, formerly known as Van Diemen’s Land until 1856. Sites like Port Arthur Historic Site are major attractions.
  • Fun Fact: Tasmania is known to have some of the cleanest air in the world, monitored at the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station on its northwest tip.

Andrew had a chat with Colin. Colin and Rebecca are living in Melbourne. We met them on the Camino Frances in 2023. Later, Michelle prepared a delicious meal for us, some Indian food with rice or chips, and Naan. I really appreciate her hospitality here.
