Road trip – 144 km – Portland

Another comfortable night in Port MacDonnell. I had a hot and good shower in the morning. Michelle has a coffee machine, much better than the instant coffee we are used to when camping. After clearing our bedrooms and breakfast, it was time to say goodbye.

Back on the road. We were driving towards Portland today. After 30 km, we crossed the border to Victoria. The time is 30 minutes ahead here. Before Portland, there would be some interesting sights to visit. The first one would be the Seal Colony at Cape Bridgewater. We stopped close to the ocean and had a coffee first. From there, it was a 45-minute walk to the Cape, through a small forest along some meadows with sheep.

We were hoping that it would not rain; we were not prepared for that. On the path, we met an echidna. The Australian echidna, specifically the short-beaked echidna, is a widespread, spiny, egg-laying mammal found throughout Australia in diverse habitats. It is a solitary and nocturnal animal that uses its strong claws and long, sticky tongue to dig for and eat ants and termites. If threatened, it curls into a ball or digs rapidly into the ground, protected by its sharp spines made of keratin.

After 45 minutes, we reached the cap. There was a platform to look out for the seals. There were some, but pretty much down as we were high on the cliff. Anyway, the view was stunning from here.

On the way back, it started to rain for a short while. The wind up here was very strong. Fortunately it didn’t last long. The way back was shorter in time, as we were walking mostly downwards.

The next stops would be the Blowholes and the Petrified Forest on this cape. We saw a caravan park and asked for the price for one night. It was a beautiful place in nature, just the wind was so strong here. So we continued driving towards the Blowholes.

It started to rain again, and we thought it was better to stay in a Hotel/Motel tonight. I found a reasonable Motel in Portland. It was just 30 minutes to drive from here. We checked in and had a good rest.

    • Yes, it’s a beautiful trip! Just a bit rainy and chilly these days in Victoria. We are for five nights in Toora now, having daytrips from here. Our tent is under a roof, so it keeps dry ⛺️ Chandresh xx
