The fire of Arunachala

In today’s satsang, Amma explained about _summa iru_ — the stillness that is the Self. At first, attentiveness (_shraddha_) is essential, but at a deeper stage neither attentiveness nor inattentiveness is needed. The power of attention is no longer pulled outward or inward; it simply rests in its source. As Amma said, “That centre is not attending on anything. For it, there is no outside or inside to attend.”

I woke up early as usual and was reading for a while. Sunset is at 06:24, so it was still dark outside. I had some curd (yoghurt) to eat. I made it with pomegranate, which I got from Gopika. I didn’t feel like going to Satsang with Ganga Maa today, so I spent a longer time at home. I thought of having a hot shower in Gopika’s apartment, which is just under my roof apartment. My shower has only cold water.

I was driving into town, bought some snacks, mainly spiced peanuts. I had a chai and just enjoyed myself and the day. I realised that the sky is never blue here in Tiru. I think the pollution causes it. I went to Perumbakkam Road to see Sampath. There was the orange malfunction lamp on my scooter, indicating that something was wrong. Sampath said I have to go to a Service station near the petrol station, they can reset it. I will go there tomorrow.

I got a message from Sarah. She was asking if I am in a peaceful place now, she is just walking towards the Ashram. I said we can meet there. It was past 11:00, so the Ashram was closed. It is always closed between 11:00 and 14:00. Sarah had issues withdrawing money at some ATM. So we were driving to an SBI (State Bank of India) ATM near the Ashram. But her card was not accepted there. It was a Master Card. So we had lunch first in a small Restaurant connected with a temple. The Thali there was only 80 Rupees. Then we were driving more into town and tried a few other ATM’s before it was successful. On the way back, I saw a vegetable market and stopped. We were strolling through the market, and I got some tomatoes and a cucumber.

We were looking for a place to have a coffee. Getting a good coffee in India is not easy. Usually it is with milk and sugar. In a simple shop, we had a coffee, not really what I am used to drinking.

In the afternoon, I just relaxed and had a two-hour nap. After waking up, I was not in the mood to go anywhere. I made some bread for dinner and just stayed at home.
